Reefton motel

Reefton

Reefton, firstly named Quartzopolis, is steeped in history. It was founded in the late 1860's with the rush to mine gold. Small gold mining towns sprang up at the same time in the surrounding hills. Much of this history has been presented with remnants still remaining of surrounding mining sites and in Reefton itself old historic buildings, historic walks, an extensive photo gallery and a museum.

It also gained fame from being the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to have a public supply of electricity with the shops of the main street being lit up in time for Christmas in 1888. Reefton is also home to some very talented artists whose work can be viewed at the Broadway gallery. Open cast coal mining and dairying are also important industries. The town is valued for its warm hospitality, with cafés and hotels offering great food. Reefton offers interesting and varied activities as well as a restful, laid back atmosphere.

Biking in Reefton

Reefton is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Mountain biking lovers will find Reefton offers a myriad of fantastic trails suited to both beginners and experts alike. It also provides some of the closest accommodation to the newly completed Old Ghost Road, which starts at Lyell in the Buller Gorge and heads west for an 80km adventure across the ranges to Seddonville on the West Coast. Alternatively, you can start on the coast and finish at Lyell. Enjoy a great night's rest in Reefton before tackling The Old Ghost Road, or soak in a warm bath at The Nurses Home after your ride! Most importantly, we are proud to be an official partner of The New Zealand Cycle Trail, and we warmly welcome cyclists to experience The Old Ghost Road and the Reefton area.
